Abstract
There are many environmental threats caused by urban development, modern technology and the progress of civilization. Owing to this fact, various protection forms were developed to protect areas with exceptional landscape amenities. In order to set up a hierarchy of values and a scale of needs in the range of prophylactic, maintenance and repair treatments, it is necessary to address the following three issues:
  1. dividing landscapes into areas showing similar characteristics;
  2. determining the degree of their transformation;
  3. landscape evaluation.
For the purpose of this study, the basis assumed was an analysis of landscapes within areas remaining under special protection. These areas were divided into sub-regions based on related characteristics; for each one, a degree of transformation was determined. Following this, preventative means, organization, protective and conservation measures are discussed. The areas in question are located within the Bieszczady Mountains Region, in which there is one national park, two landscape parks and fourteen nature reserves with protection zones. This study constitutes an initial phase of the entire project to be followed by a practical analysis of the landscape within the protected areas.
