Abstract
The first pieces of information on the breeding of Hucul horses date back to the times of the Austrian monarchy in the mid-1800. Hucul horses are at present bred in Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and Ukraine. The biggest amount of breeding material has been collected in Poland, mainly in state farms. These horses, according to the FAO recommendations on the Preservation of Genetic Resources of Farm Animals, were classified as a vanishing breed and they were included in the conservative breeding program.
