Abstract
The subjects of the experiment were 80 Pekin ducks from P11 and P22 conservative flocks, 40 birds (20 drakes, 20 ducks) from each strain. Birds were kept in a confinement building in deep-litter pens and fed ad libitum commercial feed mixtures for waterfowl. Compared to P22 ducks, P11 ducks had greater body weight at 8 weeks of age (3372 vs 3338 g), longer trunk and keel (significant difference), and greater chest circumference (significant difference). Lower feed intake per kg body weight and greater values of the European Production Index (EPI) were found in P11 birds compared to P22 birds. Dressing percentage was high at 71.0% in birds of both strains. Percentage of breast muscles in carcass with neck was greater in P22 ducks (13.8%) compared to P11 ducks (13.5%). The proportion of leg muscles in carcass was the same (12.2%) in the birds of both strains. The proportion of skin with subcutaneous fat was higher in the carcasses of P11 ducks (31.4%) compared to P22 ducks (30.1%).
